Published Nov 11, 2019

November 11, 2019 – Los Angeles – The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) is excited to announce Sporting Detroit Soccer Club as a new member kicking off with the 2020 Spring Season.

Based in Dertoit (Mich.), Sporting Detroit SC will begin UPSL play in the Midwest Conference East Division, and will host its home games at Kilgore Field (1460 E. Forest Ave., Detroit, MI 48207) in compliance with UPSL's National Standards.

United Premier Soccer League Michigan Manager Robert Brinkman said, "Sporting Detroit SC has a nice talent pool and a family attitude, and it just makes sense to have them as the newest member of the UPSL's Midwest Conference. The club won the MPSL Open Division in 2019, and has competed very well against higher division teams. The State of Michigan is rich in soccer talent, and Sporting Detroit SC has a good grasp on what it takes to play at the next level. We're all in on helping them grow and become as big as they want to be."

Marsel Cilla is Owner and President of Sporting Detroit SC. Born in Albania, Cilla graduated from Troy (Mich.) High School and was a former player with several amateur clubs in Michigan.

Sporting Detroit SC Owner and President Marsel Cilla said, "We like that the UPSL continues to take steps as a National League, and our players and club want to compete at the next level. We feel that the UPSL offers a higher level of competition, and the nationwide exposure that the players deserve. We firmly believe that it will be more competitive, and that's what we're aiming for to develop players for the next level. We'll be ready for it because we have the staff and people in place. We owe it to the staff, my brother, my wife, the players and a number of others, because if it wasn't for them we wouldn't be here."

George Chomakov serves as Head Coach of Sporting Detroit SC. A native of Bulgaria, Chomakov currently plays for Detroit City FC, and is Assistant Coach of the Men's Soccer team at Livonia (Mich.)'s Schoolcraft College.

Sporting Detroit SC is the Michigan Premier Soccer League (MPSL) Open Division 2019 Summer Season champion, as was a finalist in the MPSL League Cup Final.

Sporting Detroit SC will host tryouts in February and March, and will soon announce its upcoming game schedule.
