United Premier Soccer League Commissioner Yan Skwara said, "This is the first of a series of international friendlies with UPSL regional conference all-star teams being pitted against international squads in selected markets across the United States in order to expose our best players and create professional playing opportunities through these matches. This is not a one-game scenario. This is the first match to kick off a set of international friendly games that the UPSL will roll out over the next 12-to-18 months, with Chicago, New York, Miami, Dallas, North Carolina and Northern California amongst the target markets we're engaging. We think our UPSL team members, supporters, fans and sponsors deserve the opportunity to participate in and enjoy competitive and exciting international matches, and this first match pits our best players in the UPSL Western Conference SoCal North Division against a highly-competitive club from Mexico's professional second division. We're really looking forward to a great event and a big crowd."

The Western Conference SoCal North Division I All-Star team will be created with two players per team with a final 18-man roster plus two goalkeepers to be announced. Among the players expected to represent the UPSL are Paolo Cardozo (L.A. 10 FC), German Alfaro (Cal FC) and Erick Carbajal (Santa Ana Winds FC).

Club Leones Negros de Universidad Guadalajara currently plays in Ascenso MX, Mexico's second-tier professional league. Commonly known as Leones Negros or 'UdeG', the Jalisco State-based club is managed by Jorge Davalos and features forward Omar Bravo, who made two World Cup appearances with Mexico. Los Angeles native Jesus M. Vazquez Delgadillo also plays for the club.
